  • Wei traveled to Santa Barbara to attend the annual ONR/AFOSR organic photovoltaics program review.
  • Ian, an incoming student, came to join us for summer research. Welcome!
  • The collaborative work between the You group and the Nicewicz group, led by Dr. Andrew Perkowski, resulted in a nice JACS Comm. Wei proved he knows a bit more polymer chemistry than just conjugated polymers.
  • Wei attended the 13th International Conference of Polymers for Advanced Technologies (PAT2015) in Hangzhou, China, and gave an invited talk/chaired one session.

  • The You group had a great showing at the 2nd Carbon Electronics & Photonics Workship at NC State, with Allison, Wentao, and Liang all in attendance!
  • Wei co-organized a symposium, "Conjugated Organic Materials for Energy Storage, Evergy Conversion, and Charge Transport", at SERMACS 2014. It was a huge success! We hope to support more regional meetings!
  • Through an international collaboration, we figured out the interesting flourine effect with our FTAZ polymer. Congratulations, Wentao and to everyone else involved! (Also featured in JACS Spotlights!)

  • Our collaboration with Prof. Dong-Chan at UNLV led to a joint paper on solution-processed small molecule solar cells.
  • Our FTAZ molecues have been studied from a different perspective by the McGehee group at Stanford and others. Check out our joint JACS article!
  • Travis has made significant contributions to our collaboration with Professor Sergei Sheiko, with the recent results on the electronic structure of molecular bottlebrushes published in ACS Macro Letters.
  • Our newly minted PhD, Dr. Jason Dyke, published his results in collaboration with the Ko grouyp (UNC Dental) on comparing the reaction kinetics of silane and dopamine in sol-gel biocomposites.

  • While in China, Wei attended the 29th Congress of Chinese Chemical Society, and gave an invited presentation in Symposium 25 (Organic Photovoltaics).
  • Wei visited University of Florida and gave a presentation in the Department of MSE. It was actually not that hot or humid.
  • Our collaboration with Professor Ade’s group has been extremely productive; we published another paper in Polymer!

  • Wei conducted an interview with UNC Gazette to promote materials science at UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Our 7th Ph.D. candidate, Jason Dyke, successfully defended his thesis! Impressively, his grandma even made it to his defense!
  • We had a group gathering to celebrate the summer, and more importantly, the newly minted Dr. Dyke!

  • In collaboration with the Wiley group at Duke, we summarized in Nanoscale the results that solution processed Cu-Ni nanowires can be used as anodes for polymer solar cells.
  • The You Group warmly welcomes new summer research students, Ms. Xue Sun from NUS, and Emily Lam from UNC!
  • Wentao got married in China! Congratulations to opening a new page of your life, Wentao!
  • In two weeks' travel in UK and France, Wei attended the Board Meeting of Polymer Chemistry (Cambridge, UK), gave a talk at Polymer Symposium in University of Warwick (near Coventry, UK), and also gave an invited talk at E-MRS (Lille, France). It was fun, but tiring!

  • Elizabeth wins the NSF Graduate Fellowship! She becomes the third NSF fellow in our group, in addition to Travis and Sam! We had a group lunch to celebrate Elizabeth's fellowship...a lunch which she ended up not being able to attend, but we had fun in her honor. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
  • We had an excellent showing in the Spring 2014 MRS Meeting in the Golden Gate State! Travis, Josh, and Rob all presented posters, and Wei gave an invited talk. See the pictures here!
  • Wei have an invited lecture in the 3rd Symposium on Organic Photovoltaics at Kent State University. It was snowing in the middle of April in Ohio! Amazing...
  • Almost the entire group (including Wei) actively participated in the 2014 NC Science Festival/ UNC Science Expo. We did a booth, "ask-a-scientist", and lab tours. Check out these pictures!
  • Sam, who did a lot of organization for our group at the Science Festival as well as designed a solar cell activity for the booth, was awarded certification as a Morehead Science Communication Ambassador. Great job, Sam!
  • Wei visited the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and gave a talk in the Department of Chemistry

  • Wentao's efforts on the impact of molecular weight on the photovoltaic properties of PBnDT-FTAZ have been summarized in this great paper in Advanced Materials. Congratulations, Wentao! This is a MUST-READ!
  • Rycel, a recent PhD graduate from our group, published her paper on the possible ways to structurally manipulate the polymer PBnDT-FTAZ in Macromolecules.
  • The Spring 2014 issue of Carolina Arts & Sciences Magazine highlighted our work on polymer solar cells in their article, "Making solar affordable and accessible".
  • We had a good showing in the ACS Spring 2014 meeting in Dallas: Wentao gave his first ACS talk, and Wei contributed two.
  • Jason traveled to Eastman to present his results on the photoinitiated polymer collaboration with the Nicewitz group.
  • Both research and education count! Rob went to volunteer at the Science Olympiad competition at Duke University and the North Carolina Student Academy of Science research competition at NCSSM (note to our colleagues: there are some VERY smart and VERY motivated high school students in this state).

  • After a grueling 18 month "battle" with NPG, our collaborative paper with Ade group at NCSU was accepted by Nature Photonics! Whew...What a relief...(Congrats all!)
  • On February 4th, Wei, Wentao, and Adam attended the "Carbon Photonics and Electronics Triangle Research Forum/ Workshop" in RTP. It was great to see a few leaders in the field of organic electronics. Hopefully significant efforts will follow to accelerate the formation of such a consortium/ center!

  • Maggie, Travis, and Wei attended the NC ACS meeting in Raleigh. Maggie presented a poster, and she got the poster award! Congrats, Maggie!
  • We welcome new members to the group! Three first years, David Dirkes, Elizabeth Keenan, and Huamin Hu, joined the big family!
  • Travis and his fiancée, Lindsay, were kind enough to host a great Thanksgiving party in their home for the group. So much good food, and so many good cooks in the group!

  • Our collaboration with UCLA under the NSF SOLAR award continuously rolls out new papers. Here is another one that studied the effect of passivation on different GaAs surfaces.
  • With the EFRC, teams from different backgrounds bring together their diverse knowledge sets to produce unique findings. Here is one example that used soluble graphene nanosheets grafted with polymers for photovoltaics.
  • Maggie received the Jason D. Altom Memorial Award for Undergraduate Research! Congrats, Maggie!
  • Wei co-organized and presented at "2013 WUT International Symposium on Advanced Optoelectronic Materials and Devices." It was a fun trip!
  • Dr. Liqiang Yang started his new job at Cree. We will miss you, Liqiang!

  • Check out the fruits of our collaboration with groups from NC State and University of North Texas! Published in Chemical Communications, we investigated iron(II) spin crossover films using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Congrats, Rob!
  • Jason was recognized by Graduate Student Mentoring Award (GSMA) for his work with undergraduate mentees.  The Office of Undergraduate Research values Jason’s “support, motivation and the perspective that you have brought to your mentee”.  Great job, Jason!
  • Together with a few other UNC Chemistry professors, Wei visited Eastman as part of the collaboration between a great company (Eastman) and a great Chemistry department (UNC Chemistry). It was inspiring to both parties!

  • Adam received the Carolina Energy Fellowship. Well deserved, Adam!
  • Wei was selected to receive the Ruth and Phillip Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement at UNC, one of the University’s most prestigious acknowledgements of faculty excellence.  Awesome!

  • Wei taught in Seville, Spain for a UNC summer program. No rain on the plain in the summer of Spain, but there was plenty of heat (over 100 degrees F!).
  • Liang's paper on the real function of semiconducting polymers in GaAs/polymer planar solar cells appeared in ACS Nano. Great job, Liang!
  • Wei took the position as an Associate Editor for the journal Polymer Chemistry on July 1. Congratulations for getting even busier, Wei!

  • Maggie, the rising senior undergraduate in our group, won the Gertrude Elion NC-ACS Undergraduate Scholarship! Congratulations, Maggie!
  • Wei presented at the ONR/AFOSR program review meeting on organic solar cells.
  • Liqiang and Liang's Perspective on ternary blend solar cells appeared in J. Phys. Chem. Lett. It took us over six months to get this Perspective finished. Definitely worth reading if you want to know alternative stategies to improve the efficiency of organic solar cells!
  • Wei visited China- three cities in a week. What a journey! Lots of stimulating discussion and it was fun!

  • You group outreach! A number of us participated in the UNC Science Expo on April 13th, where approximately 10,000 people were hosted. Robert and Allison volunteered at NanoDays, held at NC State. Robert also volunteered at the NC Science Olympiad state tournament, held at NC State.

  • Rycel's mini-review on polymer solar cells was selected as one of the top 9 articles out of 1300+ for "Best of Macromolecular Journals 2012" by Wiley. Congratulations, Rycel!
  • Our FTAZ polymer seems insensitive to both morphology and thickness, which typically are bis issues for other polymer based solar cells. Our studies are described in our recent collaborative paper with Ade group in Advanced Functional Materials.

  • In his latest paper, Liqiang shows >5% solar cell efficiency using a surface-bound poly(3-methylthiophene) film as a hole transport layer in bulk heterojunction solar cells.
  • Check out Jason's recent paper, where he shows how incorporating a cross-linkable polymer into a modified siloxane composite for use in curing bone deficiency significantly improves the strength of the composite.

  • After two years' hard work (experiments, writing, revision, etc.), with the help of Robert, Jeremy's third paper appeared in JACS. We wish you the best, Jeremy!
  • We were all tired after almost four hours with successful back-to-back defenses by Andrew and Liqiang, but very happy for them! Congrats, Dr. Stuart and Dr. Yang!
  • Wei was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, and assumed the responsibility of Vice Chair for Research in the Chemistry Department. In Wei's words: "Very memorable six years... We worked hard, but we also had fun!" Congrats, Wei!

  • Fluorine leads to a dramatic increase in the efficiency of polymer solar cells. Over 7% efficiencies have been achieved in two different materials as reported in Angewante Chemie and JACS. Amazing!
